on Web Design:

People surf the web for many different reasons. Those reasons are as different as the people themselves. Some professionals advocate (like Jacob Nielsen) that the web is really for information only and that the very content of the information should drive the design of the website. We agree. However, to truly design a unique and different website that "makes a first impression", enough to qualify for a bookmarking, really does require the talent and skill of an "artist", who understands the web, yet adheres to the fundamental principles of utility and simplicity in navigation, etc., etc. There are many "designers" ( amatuer and professional alike) who are just not artists. You've probably heard about the kid next door that built his own web page and put it up on the web in a few minutes, all the while not realizing there's a big difference between a web page and web site ( particularly one set up for a business), not to mention one created by an artist. Sometimes they're programmers, many times they're people trying to save $, sometimes they're people who think they're artists, and the list goes on... The point is...."Do you have the time to learn it and do-it-yourself? With the threshold to deployment of a website so low, the web will unfortnunately continue to be inundated with bad designs, or at least until people realize that it really is more cost effective in terms of return on investment (ROI) and beneficial to hire a pro.
